The new base will be at OX2 0JJ, at the back of Habitat at the Seacourt Tower retail park.

Yes, that's right we are moving.  The new base will be at OX2 0JJ, at the back of Habitat at the Seacourt Tower retail park.

We will be at the back of Habitat: when entering the site from the Botley Road, go straight rather than right, and look for the larger roller door.

There is the opportunity to become part of the committee and help shape this year to promote and engage in a wonderfully tasty and important issue that concerns us all.

Food Justice is an exciting student volunteering project. It is run by a committee of students and residents that aim to raise awareness, research, and plan events related to food ethics issues. These issues can include food waste, food poverty, local food, health, nutrition, and food policy, and anything else the committee is interested in.

Some of the exciting activities on the menu are:

Thank you very much to the many people who contributed money and showed interest in the OFB at today's street collection in Cornmarket.  Thanks particularly to the narby Big Issue seller who felt that we were attracting some of the people who would normally be giving him money, but who still gave us a donation himself.

About 60 people visited the depot today as part of Oxford Open Doors.  They learned about where we get our food from, where it goes to, and some of the interesting things about the organisation.  They left with a packet of rice and a leaflet about the organisation.  It was very nice to get so much interest - thank you for coming!

Hiba Naeem from Glasgow has been helping us this week as part of her Duke of Edinburgh award.  She has been helping our drivers to pick up and deliver food, helping staff at Donnington Doorstep to prepare the food, cleaning the depot and delivering fund-raising leaflets.  Thank you for your wonderful work, Hiba!Hiba Naeem.

In addition to the projects that we regularly deliver to a number of new charities have come to help us reduce the rice mountain:
  • Young Dementia UK,
  • Liveability
  • Rose Hill Children's Centre
  • Refugee Assistance
  • Asylum Welcome

It’s great to be able to report that we have had several significant donations recently

The state of the Food Bank’s finances had been worrying us recently; though our running costs are very low by comparison with most charities (because we are entirely voluntary) we do have basic costs - principally fuel, various insurances and depot maintenance. At the beginning of March the money was running out.

Nigel tells us how the Oxford Food Bank supports Steppin' Stones, a charity for homeless people in East Oxford..

Steppin' Stomes - The Porch is a charity for homeless people and people who are vulnerably housed in East Oxford. Steppin' Stones provides nutritious meals at their day-centre.  Much of the food is grown on their own allotment, but this is now supplemented by deliveries from the Oxford Food Bank, which greatly improves the range of the food that they can offer. Watch the video to hear what Nigel has to say!

Mrs Smith, a member of the Littlemore Church of the God of Prophecy, said she pledged to help the homeless after walking along streets like Cowley Road and seeing those in need.

“THERE is no one else like her. She is an angel on Earth.”

Those were the words of homeless people enjoying the 20th annual Christmas dinner cooked by Icolyn ‘Ma’ Smith.

The grandmother of nine, of Kelburne Road, Cowley, has been cooking slap-up dinners for the city’s homeless and needy since 1990.
